Today’s Health Awareness Topic: Vitamin Deficiencies and Supplements

If you discover that you have a vitamin deficiency, please consult a doctor and follow their advice. If your vitamin levels are significantly low, food alone may not be enough to correct the deficiency quickly. Your doctor may recommend supplements based on your test results and individual needs.

When I checked my vitamin D levels, mine were only 9 ng/mL. My doctor prescribed supplements, and I took them for the duration recommended. After my levels improved to around 26 ng/mL, I focused on maintaining them through regular outdoor walks and my diet, following appropriate medical guidance.

Remember, vitamin levels that are too low can cause health problems, but excessive amounts of certain vitamins can also be harmful. Fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamins A and D, can accumulate in the body when taken in excess.

Never assume that a supplement is harmless just because it is called a vitamin or a nutritional supplement.

I know someone who was advised by her doctor to take a vitamin B12 supplement for six weeks. However, she continued taking it for about a year because she thought nutritional supplements were always beneficial. Her B12 levels remained above the usual range for a prolonged period, and she later experienced health concerns. This is why it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions and get your levels monitored when advised.

Please remember:

– Get tested when a deficiency is suspected and consult a qualified doctor.
– Take supplements only as prescribed.
– Follow the recommended dose and duration.
– Do not extend the course or increase the dose on your own.
– Get follow-up blood tests when your doctor recommends them.
– Maintain your vitamin levels with a balanced diet, appropriate sunlight exposure, and medical guidance.

Your health matters more than taking supplements unnecessarily. Take them responsibly and never self-prescribe high doses.
